Traffic Calming Update

Almost half of households on Country Club Drive have responded in favor of a traffic calming study. The study will proceed after we reach the 50% threshold, which is a few more households. A significant number more still need to respond from Terry Manor and N. Country Club Drive if either of these areas are to also have a traffic calming study.

Many of the responses simply indicated support of the study. However, a number also included comments regarding the traffic in our area and I wanted to share these comments with you:

Issues on Country Club Drive:

  • Lots of traffic
  • Skateboarders and traffic “compete for space”
  • Accidents
  • U-Turns
  • Out-of-state cars
  • Used as a thru-way, cut-through traffic
  • Speeding at 45 mph+, speeding out of control
  • Some of the residents are the worst offenders
  • Lawn damage from traffic
  • Litter from traffic
  • Not stopping at lights or signs - People run the stop sign on a daily basis - Very few use the stop sign - I don’t think we need the stop sign: N Country Club & Danbury - Wasting gas and creating pollution can be avoided by removing the stop sign; N Country Club & Windsor - Creates a safety hazard by creating confusion at the intersection
  • Parking in “no parking” areas
  • Parking on sidewalks

Actions Suggested:

  • Now we have even heavier speeders on our street; we need something!
  • Go for a study!
  • Yes, but no speed bumps.
  • I don’t think we need a traffic calming study, and I don’t think we need speed bumps. Fairfield is not a trailer park.
  • Please do take “measures”
  • Get the people to observe the 25 mph speed limit
  • I do not favor any traffic calming devices. I believe people will still speed through them and will be a waste of money. The money would be better spent on occasional police presence.
  • We could use a turn lane on Delrem Dr at the stop light on 273.
  • I hope this study will be conducted on to N. Country Club Dr. as well. Although our traffic flow in considerably less than the “main” section, we still have problems with excessive speeding.
  • We think it would be great to reduce the speed and volume of traffic that passes our house every day and would support these efforts.

Two Comments from Terry Manor
Living here on this street as a permanant resident is not easy. There is a lot to put up with, but the speed and traffic is something that may be remedied with someone from the city to stand up for us.

I have myself witnessed one crash on this road from my porch, caught the rap-up of several others, and seen numerous accounts of very heavy, high speed traffic here. All of your initiatives sound like they may be effective for this road but you may want to consider why this road gets as much traffic as it does. First most of it is going up hill from New London to W. Main street and I believe the reason for this is obvious. The light at the intersection of Cleveland and New London is as my roommate has described “the bane of my existence;” some measures to speed up the timing of this light may alleviate a great deal of the traffic.

Ezra,
In the recent month the Newark Police have been enforcing the speed limits and the stop signs on Country Club Drive. Apparently, this has for the present this has been effective as the word has gotten around that speeding and failure to stop at the signs will result in summons for violations.

The Police may wish to address the failure of many people to stop at the stop signs within the parking lot at Superfresh. There is a stop sign mounted on the pole as you come up to the corner of the building approaching the main lot. The other is on the same pole facing the roadway that runs along the front of the market. You come up to it when passing along the front of the store when leaving the lot to make the turn to go out to Country Club Drive.

Almost none of the people entering from Country Club to go into the lot and almost none leaving the lot when passing along the front of the market to go to Country Club stop for the signs.

It is a miracle that there has not been a collision in either direction. From what I have been told the Newark Police have the authority to patrol these lots and enforce the signs.

Perhaps, they can get people to start obeying stop signs there just as they have in other locations. Failure to obey stop signs seems to be a large problem in the city as I have seen people delibertly run the signs and in some locations the traffic lights as well.
